Description
A tourist takes a photo of some of the stone carvings next to the Holy Door (Puerta Santa) of Santiago de Compostela's cathedral in northwest Spain. These sculptures were added to the Door in stages during the 1600s; all have different expressions and features and are fascinating to examine in detail as well as providing some fun and unusual photo opportunities! The site has been a major pilgrimage destination since the 9th century when according to legends the long lost tomb with the body of St James the Great (the apostle who brought Christianity to the Iberian Peninsula) was discovered. King Alfonso II ordered a church to be built on the site; this building has since been replaced and expanded over the centuries resulting in the current cathedral. The cathedral and Santiago de Compostela's Old Town were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985.
