The granite towers of Patagonia can be awe inspiring and are among some of the most spectacular mountains on the planet. This image of sunrise on the famous pinnacle of Cerro Torre (3102m / 10,175ft) was the result of a pre-dawn climb up a hill near El Chalten which (weather permitting) has wonderful panoramas of the region's famous peaks. The peaks to its right are the Torre Eggar (2850m / 9,350ft) and Aguja Standhart (2700m / 8,860ft). The peaks are among the highlights of the Los Glaciares National Park, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981.
Cerro Torre is one of the world's most difficult climbs, both due to the sheerness of its rock faces, unusual ice formations and often extreme weather conditions and high winds. It has seen plenty of controversy in mountaineering circles, especially regarding a disputed first ascent by Italian mountaineer Cesare Maestri in 1959 (his partner Toni Egger was killed by an avalanche in the descent); and Maestri's use of a compressor drill and bolts on a later ascent in 1970. The first undisputed ascent was made in 1974 by another Italian team.
