Description
A high angle view looking west of part of Cardiff castle with the city in the distance taken from the Capital Tower building; the trees behind it are in Bute Park. Cardiff has had a castle since at least Norman times and the 11th century motte and bailey keep are clearly visible on the right of the image inside the more recent walls and buildings. The Bute family owned the castle and much of the surrounding area from the mid 18th to mid 20th centuries. The 3rd Marquess of Bute commissioned major enlargements to the castle in the mid 19th century; the Victorian Gothic Revival style palace and lodgings on the left are part of this expansion.
