Description
Tonbridge Castle's twin towered gatehouse is one of the finest of its kind in England and was completed in 1260. The neighbouring mansion was added in the 1790s. The hill / mound on the left is manmade, the motte of the original motte and bailey fort that was built soon after the Norman Conquest to guard what has long been an important crossing point of the River Medway. Part of the moat that was also dug at this time (around 50,000 tonnes of earth were moved and used to make the motte) can still be seen nearby.
