Description
A flock of Andean flamingos (Phoenicopterus andinus) feeding in a lake in the altiplano of western Bolivia. They are the rarest of the three flamingo species found in the high Andes and a listed endangered species. They are found on high altitude saline lakes in Bolivia, northern Chile and northern Argentina, and also in southern Peru outside the breeding season. It is the only flamingo that has yellow legs and three toed feet. In the breeding season adult birds develop a beautiful deep pink flush on the head and neck. The paler birds in this shot are immature or non-breeding birds. This shot was taken on a stormy afternoon in the rainy season; the dark grey skies reflected in the water really make the pink colours of the flamingos stand out!
