Description
A panoramic photo of the Lluta Valley near Arica in the Atacama Desert, the northernmost major valley in Chile. The Atacama is the world's driest and probably oldest desert, many parts are completely barren and never see rainfall. In contrast, the river valleys that cross the desert carrying rainfall from the nearby Andes to the Pacific Ocean can be very fertile, and are the main source of water in the region.
