Description
Steam and sulphurous vapours rise in the cold early morning air from the volcanic hot springs at Polloquere on the southern shore of the Salar de Surire, a remote and beautiful salt flat in the far north of Chile. The main pool in the image is most active at night and early morning when parts of it bubble and boil like a cauldron, it settles down during the middle of the day. As well as being a Ramsar Wetland site the Salar is also part of the Lauca Biosphere Reserve, recognised by UNESCO in 1981.
