Description
Natural sulphur / sulfur deposits on the shore of the volcanic hot springs at Polloquere that form part of the Salar de Surire, a remote and stunningly beautiful salt flat in the far north of Chile. The main pool in the image is more active at night and early morning when parts of it bubble and boil like a cauldron, causing large clouds of sulphur vapour and steam to fill the air. The volcanos in the background are Arintica (left, 5590m / 18,340ft) and Puquintica (right, 5712m / 18,740ft). The Salar is also part of the Lauca Biosphere Reserve, recognised by UNESCO in 1981.
