Description
A view of typical reed houses on the Uros Floating Islands in Lake Titicaca near Puno, Peru. The islands belong to the indigenous Uros or Uru people and are one of Peru's best known tourist attractions. The islands and the houses are made from totora reeds (Schoenoplectus californicus subsp. tatora) which grow in huge numbers in the shallower parts of the lake. The reeds are also used for making boats and turn a beautiful golden yellow colour when they dry out. Both conical and rectangular huts are common, bundles of recently cut reeds can be seen stacked up next to the houses.
