Description
The Union Jack flag flies above the Middlesex Guildhall building in London on a sunny winter's day. The building is the home (since 2009) of both the Supreme Court of the United Kingdom and the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council and is located on the southwest corner of Parliament Square in Westminster (close to Westminster Abbey). Construction started in 1906 in art nouveau and gothic revival styles; the Guildhall originally served as an administrative and court centre for the County of Middlesex, hence the name.
The tree is a plane trees (a Platanus hybrid Platanus × acerifolia, often called Platanus × hispanica), common in London (they are often called "London plane" or "London planetree") and many other European cities.
