Description
A close up shot of the fine Welsh dragon sculpture on top of the dome of Cardiff's City Hall in South Wales, home to Cardiff's local city government. The building is an important early example of Edwardian Baroque architecture and and opened in 1906. The oldest recorded use of the dragon (in Welsh: Y Ddraig Goch "the red dragon" is on the Welsh flag) to symbolise Wales dates to around AD 829. It may well have older origins - it is popularly supposed to have been the battle standard of King Arthur and other ancient Celtic leaders. The bronze statue is the work of Henry Charles Fehr (1867 - 1940), whose works include several notable sculptures and many war memorials across Britain.
