Description
An ornate tinamou (Nothoprocta ornata) blends in well with its typical grassland habitat of the high Andean altiplano in western Bolivia. The tinamous are a family of ground dwelling birds that look similar to grouse and partridges (though they are more closely related to rheas and ostriches) that are found from Mexico southwards and throughout South America. There are 46 species, they can fly but prefer to walk or run, most are well camouflaged. The ornate tinamou is one of several species that live in the high Andean plains, it is found in central and southern Peru, western Bolivia, the extreme north of Chile and northern Argentina.
