Description
A freight train crosses the Salar de Chiguana salt flat in Nor / North Lipez Province in south west Bolivia. This railway runs from Uyuni in Bolivia to Calama and Antofagasta in northern Chile. Construction originally started in 1873 when the whole region was Bolivian territory; Calama and Antofagasta became part of Chile after the War of the Pacific (1879-1883). The line was originally built to transport minerals from the region to Antofagasta (which is an important port) and that is still its main function today; a passenger service has been discontinued. The route was originally owned by the Antofagasta & Bolivia Railway or FCAB (after the Spanish name Ferrocarril de Antofagasta a Bolivia); it is now owned by the Bolivia state company FCA Ferroviaria Andina. In the left distance is the Ollague volcano (5865m / 19,250ft) which lies on the Bolivia - Chile border.
