Description
The garra de leon ("Lion's Claw", Leontochir ovallei or Bomarea ovallei) is one of Chile's rarest flowers and only grows in a small area of the southern Atacama Desert (the world's driest). Plants in this region usually only bloom if there is sufficient spring rainfall, a phenomena is known locally as El Desierto Florido (The Flowering Desert) that occurs roughly twice a decade. Its beauty and rareness means it is highly prized by plant collectors and fetches a high price on black markets.
